We
stayed at Shangri-La for 5 nights in March 2018 and you can read the
Chiang Mai trip report
here. When we landed at Chiang Mai airport we were supposed to get a
pickup from the hotel but due to some communication problems this did
not happen. But the Shangri-La staff at the airport helped us organize a
taxi so it was not a big problem. The drive from the airport to the
hotel only took like 15 minutes. When we got to the hotel we were met by
the staff and they apologized for the pickup problem. We were taken to
the Horizon lounge on the 11th floor and got checked in. We got room
1012 facing the pool side of the hotel. You can see the location of the
hotel on this Chiang Mai
Google map.
The
room was large and had a combination of wooden walls and light walls. As
usually on
Shangri-La hotels, the interior and setup are a bit old school but
tasteful. There was a desk and a chair, two comfortable chairs and a
table and a huge bed that was a bit on the hard side, but the pillows
were great. Due to my status on Shangri-La we had also gotten some
amenities (like sparling water and wine). The bathroom had one sink,
bathtub, a good size shower corner and various amenities. There was a
window to the room from the bathroom and this could be closed with a
sliding door to cover the window. Apart from this there was flat screen
TV, a small safe, iron/ironing board etc. The WIFI was free and worked
very well.
The
view from the window was good as we had a view to the pool side which is
away from town – so there were lots of green trees in the line of sight.
It was possible for us to have breakfast both on the horizon lounge and
the main restaurant. I tried both and the horizon lounge is quieter and
has less of a selection. But all in all, the selection in both places
are great with cereal, bread, good fruit, coffee etc. The staff in the
lounge were great and help us e.g. when we wanted to organize rental of
a scooter one day. The pool area is large and has food and drink
service. The pool was quite deep (2,5 meters at least) which is a bit
unusual these days – maybe that is why there were always guards on duty
by the pool. The location of the hotel is good – there are some
restaurants and shops nearby. It takes about 15 minutes to walk over to
the edge of the old town. We used Uber a few times to get around and
that worked fine.
Conclusion: all in all, a great hotel with a
room that is similar to many other Shangri-La hotels. The staff is
helpful and attentive. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to
family and friends if they are going to Chiang Mai. Check out the
hotel website for more details. Click here to get back to the
